Nomadic America

Kitra Cahana

The movement of human beings across the American landscape has been an enduring and central theme of American national iconography since the inception of the country. Movement can be found at the center of nearly every story Americans tell themselves as a nation. From the immigrant boat drifting past the statue of liberty to the covered wagon of the pioneers, from the locomotive to the Harley Davidson, our methods of movement have, each in their time, become emblems of our most cherished
collective ideal: freedom. And so deeply are we connected to the idea of movement that it’s personification—the nomad—is at the very core of our national myth-making.
