Réalités données (Given data)

Exhibit

L’Institut pour la Photographie commissioned six MAPS photographers – Elena Anosova, Matthieu Gafsou, Cédric Gerbehaye, Simona Ghizzoni, Christian Lutz & John Vink – in collaboration with MAPS creative Chiqui Garcia, to produce a collective work on the Hauts-de-France region.

Taking regional statistical data as a starting point, six unique and complementary series have been produced around themes addressing both the photographers’ sensitivities, and current social issues: immigration, agriculture, parenthood, etc.

Numbers ultimately tell us very little about the reality of a region and the experiences of its inhabitants. This paradox shaped the photographic approach to the project. It brought the photographers closer to the inhabitants, who were photographed but also became participants – by photographing, writing, drawing.

“Réalités données” is part of “En Quête(s) Photographiques”, an exhibition from April 3rd to June 14th, 2020. Institut pour la Photographie, Lille, France.
